MythTv on the XBox

juillet 24, 2006

I reallised a few days ago that since both my PVR and my XBox are now connected on a 100 Mbits router (the PVR used to be on our WiFi network) I would have enough bandwidth to stream movies from one to the other, letting me watch the movies I record on my PVR on the TV upstairs.

Of course, I could just mount a network disk using Samba and play the files with a media player on my XBox… but wouldn’t it be cool to have graphic menus and everything? So I started working on having MythTv to work on my XBox… Now, MythTv is a strange beast, and Xebian is a stranger one. I got into weird caracter encoding problems in MySQL, then some database privileges that went away by themselves. An hour later, I was able to launch MythTv front-end and edit settings through MythTv’s fancy menus. Then I got the back-end to run, but now the front-end crashes with a Segmentation fault. It’s a lot of fun!

That’s one of the problem with Linux and its users; installing and configuring software can be such a pain. I understand that writing a piece of software is so much more interesting than writing an install script for it. Hey, what are you going to do… The license stipulates the software comes without any warranty so I shouldn’t be complaining; I got more than I paid for.

Anyhow… I haven’t completly give up, but I spent enough time on this for now. I will let it sleep a day or two and maybe I will come back to it. Or maybe I will simply use Samba and a media player… As a matter of facts, do I really need to watch TV upstairs? Do I need to watch TV at all? Maybe I should be writing instead…
