Universal « Yes » Sign

juin 30, 2005

Someone would believe that the sign for « Yes » (moving you head up and down) is universal, that it is used around the world and that everybody understand it. (By the way, Jérémie started to shake his head to say « yes » and « no ».) :)

Well, it seems like my eyes were shut and I was concentrating too much on the Western culture.

As some of you may know, I sometime have to work with contractors and consultants from India. It always puzzled me that when you talk to them, and they agree with what you’re saying, they shake their head from side to side, instead of up and down as I would normally expect. It’s a stupid detail, I know, but it always gets my subcounsious spinning and raising the alert flag « Hey, he doesn’t get a workd of what you’re saying! »

As small the world has become with the modern traveling means and the Internet, I’ll always be surprised and facinated by cultural differences. Isn’t Earth a nice place to live? (Well, it’s the only place to live, but you get what I meant. Don’t be that picky!)
